I start on one side about a third of the way from the corner and lay the raw edge of the binding flush with the raw edge of the quilt. There is always about a half inch of backing and batting showing. I leave a 'tail' of batting, about 12 inches, and put a pin at that point. I start sewing at the pin toward the corner. I backstitch at the beginning so the stitches won't pull out.
I sew to one-quarter inch of the edge and stop. I leave the needle in the fabric and turn the quilt so that I can backstitch off the entire quilt. Then I pull the quilt toward me, away from the needle. I do not cut the threads.
