Binding Tutorial Step 9

Now I turn the binding to the back side and secure with binding clips. These are so much easier on the hands and arms than straight pins! I don't turn all the binding at once on the entire quilt, but turn a little, secure with clips, then move them as I come to them.  A few clips go a long way!  I pull the binding straight out from the quilt as I turn it to get rid of any little folds in the seam, and I turn under the excess backing and batting into the binding so the binding will be nice and full.  Since I used the same binding as the backing, it's hard to see, but when I hand sew this down, using a 'whip' stitch, I make sure the seam is covered with binding.  The last picture is of the binding on the right side, to show how the corner is automatically mitred when the binding is turned to the back.  This hasn't been stitched down by hand yet on the back, but it's lookin' pretty darn good!  This is my favorite way to apply binding.  I also like leaving enough of the backing fabric to fold to the front and stitch down; sometimes the reverse--pulling the front border to the back and stitching it down; and of course, the bias tube method of making binding which is a whole different animal, but fun to do, too!
